When your heart skips a beat, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in love; sometimes, it can be an indication that you need instant medical attention. Holter monitor is a compact device used for event monitoring, and it records your heart’s activity throughout the day, regardless of the time. Generally, you have to wear it for 24 to 48 hours, and only in rare cases does the patient have to keep the ECG machine attached for more than two weeks.

There are certain restrictions you have to follow while wearing a Holter monitor, and your cardiologist will inform you what they are. In this blog, we will mention what to avoid when wearing a Holter monitor.

Restrictions While Wearing a Holter Monitor

Since you will be wearing the Holter monitor for 24 to 48 hours only, it shouldn’t be that difficult to adhere to the restrictions. Here are some things you can’t do while wearing a Holter Monitor:

  1. Do Not Get the Holter Monitor Damp
The Holter monitor is an electronic device, and exposing it to water can affect its function. This could lead to inaccurate results and affect the readings, which is why it is best not to shower with a Holter monitor.
  2. Stay Away From Magnets
A Holter monitor sends electric impulses; being within the vicinity of a magnet can affect the electric impulses. This will lead to inaccuracy, which can result in misdiagnosis and may be life-threatening for you. Therefore, stay away from magnets as well as magnetic items, which include MRI machines and even magnetic jewelry.
  3. Avoid Electric Wires
Coming in contact with electric wires, particularly those that are plugged in, can send you in shock.
  4. Steer Clear of Metal Detectors
Metal detectors contain electromagnetic fields that can interfere with signal transmission. This leads to adverse effects on the accuracy of the recorded readings.
  5. Avoid Using Electronics
If you use an electronic device with high voltage power, it can throw off electromagnetic fields, which may malfunction with the monitor. From electric toothbrushes to ovens, anything can interfere with the results, so it is better to stay away from such devices while you are wearing your monitor.
  6. Keep Cellular Phones, MP3 Players, and Other Devices 6 Inches Away
Yes, it is pretty hard to stay away from your cell phone. However, you must keep your phone and similar devices away from the Holter monitor in order to have accurate results.
  7. Refrain from Smoking & Drinking
When you are under the influence of alcohol or when you smoke, the results will be inaccurate. Therefore, you should steer clear of nicotine and alcohol because they can interfere with the heart rate. This leads to an inaccurate diagnosis.

Final Note

There are many restrictions to follow while you are wearing a Holter Monitor, and you will have to avoid smoking, drinking, exposure to water, use of electronics, and much more. Make sure you follow the doctor’s instructions for accurate results.
